[edit]From the regionalism jid + -an, from Old Church Slavonic жидъ (židŭ), from Proto-Slavic *židъ, ultimately from Ancient Greek Ἰουδαῖος (Ioudaîos) and Hebrew יהודי (Yehudi); see also Russian жид (žid), Serbo-Croatian žid, Ukrainian жид (žyd).
