Borrowed from Ottoman Turkish ارغوان (ergavan, erguvan), from Persian ارغوان (arğavân, arğuvân, purple; Judas tree), from Akkadian 𒅈𒂵𒌋𒌋𒉡 (argamannu). Doublet of adžùvān.
