From Proto-Finnic *kansa, borrowed from Proto-Germanic *hansō (earlier *hansā).[1] Cognate with Livvi kanzu, Veps kanz.

  • In the sense "nation, people" the terms kansa and kansakunta are nearly synonymous, although kansa tends to refer to a cultural or ethnic entity and kansakunta to a political entity.
