Etymology

From Proto-Finnic *korpi (deep forest) (compare Estonian kõrb, Livvi korbi (big spruce forest), Veps korb), possibly from Proto-Uralic *korpe, in which case cognate with Erzya куро (kuro), Northern Khanty [script needed] (χăr), Western Mansi [script needed] (kōrp) and Forest Nenets [script needed] (kurᵊ).[1]
