llémena

From Wiktionary, the free dictionary

Catalan

[edit]

Etymology

[edit]

Most likely simply from Late Latin lendina,[1] variant of lendinem, from Classical Latin lendem.

The unexpected /m/ (instead of */n/, the usual outcome of Latin /-nd-/) may be due to analogy with another word- or simply dissimilation from the following /n/.

Pronunciation

[edit]

Noun

[edit]

llémena f (plural llémenes)

  1. a nit
  2. (textiles, usually in the plural) a small defect in a piece of cloth with the appearance of a nit
  3. a hedgehog mushroom (Hydnum repandum), so named from having bodies with the appearance of a nit instead of gills on the underside of the fruiting body to disperse the spores
