[edit]From Old English hlȳd (“noise, sound, tumult, disturbance, dissension”), from Proto-Germanic *hlūdijō (“sound”), from Proto-Indo-European *ḱlew- (“to hear”). Influenced by Old Norse hljóð (from Proto-Germanic *hleuþą). The final vowel is generalised from Old English inflected forms.
