Syncopated from *madĭtus (with subsequent assimilation of /dt/ to /tt/), from madēre (be drunk, be wet), itself from Proto-Italic *madēō, from Proto-Indo-European *meh₂d- (wet). Cognate of Sanskrit मत्त (mattá, drunk).
