[edit]From meco (“dissolute man”) + trefe (“mischievous”), first element from Latin moechus (“adulterer, fornicator”), second element of unknown origin.(Can this(+) etymology be sourced?)
Or, possibly of shared origin with Spanish mequetrefe by borrowing from Arabic مُخَطْرِف (muḵaṭrif, “raving”).
