From Proto-Germanic *midjagardaz, from the base of middil + gard. Cognate with Old English middangeard, Old High German mittilgart, Old Norse miðgarðr, Gothic 𐌼𐌹𐌳𐌾𐌿𐌽𐌲𐌰𐍂𐌳𐍃 (midjungards).
