Found throughout Sabaki and in nearby languages, like Yao naasi (coconut), although this may be due to borrowing. Other cognates refer to different palms, e.g. Luhya munazi (oil palm) and Tooro omunazi (date palm), leaving the origin and meaning unknown, although a nebulous connection to Proto-Bantu *ngàdí (palm oil) has been suggested.
