[edit]From Malay negeri, from Classical Malay negeri (“settlement”), from Sanskrit नगरी (nagarī, “city”). Doublet of nagari and negara.
- The sense of district was reinforced as translation of Japanese 地方 (chihō, “district, province, area”).
