Finnish
[edit]Etymology
[edit]From Proto-Finnic *pihlaga, from Proto-Finno-Ugric *pićlä. Cognate with Estonian pihlakas, Votic pihlaga (Kattila, Mati), Ingrian pihlaja.
Pronunciation
[edit]Noun
[edit]pihlaja
- rowan, mountain ash (Sorbus aucuparia)
- pihlaja ei kahta taakkaa kanna: marjoja ja lunta ― an abundance of rowanberries means a harsh winter is coming (literally, “a rowan won't bear two burdens: berries and snow”)
- Any tree in the genus Sorbus.
Usage notes
[edit]- As Sorbus aucuparia is by far the most numerous and widely spread Sorbus species in Finland, the word pihlaja usually refers to that species.
