[edit]From Old Norse straumr (“stream”), from Proto-Germanic *straumaz, cognate with English stream and German Strom. The Germanic word goes back to Proto-Indo-European *srew- (“to flow”), cf. Ancient Greek ῥέω (rhéō) and Sanskrit स्रवति (srávati).
