A: Nerd is a term that can be used to describe a person who typically are very studious or very intelligent. It is also often used interchangeably with the word 'geek'.
Before the 2000s, nerd was often used as an insult in school yards to make fun of someone who had poor social skills and focused heavily on school.
In more recent years, people have been calling themselves nerds to express their interest in things that are less mainstream.

A: I will try to explain the difference from my understanding of how the words are used.

1. Nerd is usually used in two main ways: in a non-insulting manner, describing someone who is smart, enjoys studying / learning, etc.

Example 1: "I've always been a math nerd. I just think it's a really interesting subject."

The other way nerd is usually used in is an insulting manner, making fun of someone who is smart, likes studying, etc.

Example 2: "Are you reading books? Why are you such a nerd?"

In example 2, the speaker is making fun of the fact that the person they're speaking to reads books.

2. Geek, similar to nerd, can be used in a non-insulting manner. When used in this way, it typically describes a person who has a strong and particular interest in pop-culture. This word seems the most appropriate to translate into オタク when used in a non-insulting way. A geek is someone who would collect comic books, action figures, memorabilia from their favorite movies, shows, things like that.

Example 3: "I didn't know Tom was such a geek. He has a bunch of Gundam action figures, and a big pile of Batman comic books in his room."

But, also similar to nerd, geek can be used negatively in a similar way. You're still talking about someone who collects comic books, action figures, things like that, but it's used in an insulting manner.

Example 4: "What kind of loser collects comic books? No wonder a loser like you would be a geek."

A: You're a math nerd.

A: yes I understand..... "nerds and geeks" used to be a BAD thing to call people, until we all discovered how much we NEED them. I think maybe GEEK is more associated with computers.. and this is why best buy named their people the GEEK SQUAD. that was really the first time i had ever heard GEEK used in a nice / good way.

but you can say 'computer nerd' just like.. "computer geek". I think it's not a terrible thing (now) to say. it can refer to people who are great with technology, computers etc.
but also.. you could call someone a 'math nerd' meaning they are really (obsessively) good with math. but you could also say 'math geek'.

another thing i'm thinking.. people who are very involved with the theatre... call themselves "theatre geeks".

i think maybe the difference is.. if the people are calling THEMSELVES a geek or a nerd.. than it's ok. if you call someone that.. maybe it's a little offensive. (because it can also imply -- sometimes correctly -- that a person is socially awkward).

In my opinion, "nerd" often has more of a feeling of being smart/intellectual, particularly in ways that are seen as "uncool":

"He's a real nerd. He's always at the top of every class. I bet studying is is favorite activity."

However, "geek" just implies "socially awkward", and in some cases can suggest they are socially ostracized, like nerds often are too, but they don't even have the benefit of being smart like nerds are (so it can sometimes have even more of a feeling of pity or disdain):

"He's such a geek, he can't even have a normal conversation without saying all kinds of weird things."

In some cases, though, "geek" may just mean somebody who has an unusually deep interest in some subject, and really pays attention to every detail about it (for example, "a comic book geek" or "a science geek").

These definitions are all very fuzzy, though, and sometimes people will have different definitions that are even completely opposite from what somebody else would say. Most people will agree they're not quite the same thing, but how they are different is something that often depends on where you are and who you're talking to.

A: Just my opinion but, Id rather be called a geek. Obsessed with something like video games, science, etc. A nerd can mean those things but it sounds more like loser, or obsessed to the point that it's annoying.
