In 1849, Tubman escaped from slavery in Dorchester County, Maryland to Philadelphia, then immediately returned to rescue her family. She made 13 missions to rescue over 70 slaves using the network of antislavery activists and safe houses known as the Underground Railroad. Because of her work as a Union spy during the American Civil War, she was buried with military honors at Fort Hill Cemetery in Auburn.
