I get asked a lot what I will be doing with my tulips once they are done flowering!

When I plant my tulips in containers I actually plant them in an inner pot.  This means that once they have finished flowering I can deadhead them and leave them to die back naturally.  If you want to keep your tulips for next year you MUST keep the foliage on as they photosynthesis and put the energy back into the bulb!

BUT…

For a reliable tulip display like mine I will always plant fresh each autumn.  The bulbs that I don’t want anymore I can then replant in my school garden at work.

20cm pot = 6 tulips
30cm pot = 20 tulips
40cm pot = 30 tulips

For containers or troughs which aren’t round, work to a spacing of 5cm between tulip bulbs.

If you’re adding layers with other types of bulbs, use slightly fewer tulips to make space for other bulbs to grow. Imagine the size of the flower when they grow and make sure there is room for each flower to have its own bit of space to avoid over crowding. If layering bulbs with tulips, put tulips on the deepest layer (15-20cm deep) with smaller bulbs on layers above. They should be planted in layers with the largest bulbs deepest and the smallest bulbs on the shallowest layer.
