Here are 5 things you should be doing when introducing your puppy to their crate:

1️⃣ Make the crate a comfortable and inviting space for them. No one wants to sleep on a hard floor so add a light padding for your puppy (unless they are a bedding destroyer).

2️⃣ Provide their toys, water, food in or near the crate. You can feed them their meals in the crate to increase the positive association with it but their water bowl and toys should also be nearby so they have a safe ‘zone’.

3️⃣ Praise and reward them for going into their crate on their own. If you want them to stay in the crate a bit longer, you can simply drop a yummy treat into the crate without saying anything.

Lexi OHaver | K9 Summit Training on Instagram: "The crate plays an essential role when training a puppy! Here are 4 do’s and don’ts of crate training:

1. DON’T put a potty pad in your pups crate “incase they need to go.” Teach them to go potty outside.

DO teach them the crate is a clean space where they eat and sleep to prevent potty accidents. Feed your pup all of their meals in the crate to help build this association.

2. DON’T talk to or let your pup out of the crate when they are barking & whining. They WILL learn this gets them what they want…and they will use it to their advantage.

DO wait until they are showing you they can be calm and relaxed before releasing them. The crate is a quiet, calm & safe space for them. Not somewhere to throw a fit!
