Gyaru (ギャル, Gal) is one of the most famous Japanese fashion subcultures. While the term has been around since 1968, it was only during the late-1980s, after Gyaru’s predecessor Bodikon spread in popularity, that "Gal culture" was born and established the iconic look that now everyone knows as Gyaru. This specifically happened when Bodikon began to “radicalise” (the look became more extreme, with dyed “chapatsu” (brown), red, and blonde hair, and tanned skin, with barely-there clothing).
