On May 6 1882, President Chester Arthur signed the Chinese Exclusionary Act. It prohibited all free immigration from Chinese laborers. This made Americans happy because many of the Chinese laborers were "stealing" their jobs, "stealing" their gold from the California Gold Rush, then continue to "steal" their major job opportunities such as building the Transcontinental Railroad. It was later revised in 1892 and is now considered unconstitutional:).
