Ninety six day old broiler chicks were randomly distributed into four treatments each having twenty four birds with eight birds per replicate (three replicates per treatment). The completely randomized design (CRD) was used. The proximate analysis of the diet was also carried out. The result of the growth performance of the starter birds showed that the final body weight, average daily feed intake, average daily weight gain and feed conversion ratio were significantly (P<0.05) affected. Thus the control had their highest value for both final body weight and average daily weight gain with a superior feed conversion ratio. The economics of production showed that the lowest cost of production was obtained in treatment four with seven hundred and eighteen naira (N718) also having the best net profit of two hundred and thirty two naira (N232). It can be concluded that dried unripe plantain peels can be added to the diet of broiler starter birds up to the level of 2.25% without any negative or detrimental effects on the birds.

This study was aimed at evaluating the effect of aqueous leaf extract of Piper guineense on the testes of adult male wistar rats. The experiment lasted for 28days. Twenty male wistar rats were randomly grouped into four groups of five animals each labeled A, B, C and D. Group A served as control, Groups B, C and D received 250mg/kg, 500mg/kg, and 1000mg/kg of aqueous leaf extract of Piper guineense respectively. Twenty four hours after the last administration, the animals were anaesthetized and dissected. The testes was harvested, weighed and fixed in 10% normal saline for histological analysis. Sperm parameters and relative organ weight was analyzed using One-way ANOVA. Testicular weight result showed the significant increase in groups B and D; group C showed a significant decrease when compared to control group. Testosterone levels showed significant decrease in groups C and D. Sperm count result showed a significant increase in group B and a significant decrease in C and D. Result showed a significant decrease in sperm motility in group D. Histopathological report showed that aqueous leaf extract of Piper guineense affected the histoarchitecture of the testes at high consumption. Results of this study revealed that Piper guineense administration increased body weight and relative testicular weight. Its low dosage had a positive effect on sperm parameters and serum testosterone while its high dose revealed a negative effect.
