I have noticed something within recent weeks within the world of fanfiction, and it worries me.
There is the recurring trend to belittle or talk down to fanfic writers that write either smut or erotica, or writers that chose to write celebrity RPF.
So lets address these
First; Smut. I’ve seen comments along the lines of “Smut degrades the fandom”, “It disrespects the characters”, “Its wrong to think of that person that way”.
Now if you are the ones saying this, take a step back and sit down for a moment as this is directly aimed at you. By telling someone that has taken the time to write down a creative piece of work that may involve a sexual act that they are devaluing society, you are no better than standing in the street telling someone to stop dressing how they feel comfortable doing so because you feel uncomfortable. “You shouldn’t wear that low cut top because it makes me uncomfortable”. (It doesn’t matter if the top is showing cleavage or chest hair, its that person’s choice not yours on what they wear) If you don’t like something, you don’t have to read it. Have you ever seen the tag; DL/DR? It means ‘If you DON’T LIKE it then DON’T READ it’. Its. not. fucking. rocket. science.
Secondly; RPF - Real Person Fiction Oh god, this again. This subject comes around about every 18 months, usually when two fandoms collide where a new ish fandom gets an influx of seasoned fan-persons from a well established fandom that already has a wealth of fanart and fics, these creators then dip their toes into the new fandom with their honed skill, only to be vilified for doing what they like doing and what was so commonly welcomed in their established fandom. Real Person Fiction. To write a fanfic where the lead character is the ‘celebrity’ in ‘real life’. Suddenly, anyone that writes this kind of fanfic, especially smut, is the devil incarnate for ruining the precious snowflake that the celebrity is. “What if they read it?”, “How can you insult them like that?”, “Its just wrong”. So yeah, what if they read it? Sweet jesus christ on a bike, you don’t think they already google themselves? Celebrities are 99% of the time famous by their own choice, they adore the limelight. They will google, insta search, check facebook and twitter, hell some even actually admit to having a Tumblr account. Of course they’ve fucking read it. And you know what? When you’re filming in some remote location and holed up in a boring hotel between takes its probably fun to have this scorching hot piece of free fiction that won’t show up in their browser history to knock one out to when they’re lonely and missing their loved ones. ‘How can you insult them like that?’ I’m sorry, what? Unless you are writing Real Person Fiction that makes them a rapist, racist, murderer then where exactly is the insult when you write that character A meets Celebrity B and they fall in love?
So, don’t be an ass. If you don’t like a story, you can A) Ignore it B) Message the writer to say thanks for tagging you but it wasn’t your kind of thing, and ask not to be tagged in that genre in future. C) Blacklist the tags.
See? Its not hard is it? These writers are producing this content FOR FREE. So shut the fuck up with your whining, no-one is forcing you to read anything you don’t want to.
Be thankful for your writers, ignore the fics that aren’t your thing and don’t shame people for writing stuff you aren’t into. In general just don’t be an asshole to people giving you free content!
