I like to think at the very beginning, during the boat ride, he was just another guy trying to impress her. If her father had attempted this tournament more than once, she probably got hit on more than a few times. Once they were on the balcony and tried to talk to her and learn more about her, she probably thought; “Well at least this guy tries to act more sincere.” Of course, she uses his attraction to her advantage cause her mind is focused on helping her dad.
It seemed like she wanted to at least start a friendship with him. The second time they were on the balcony (when Jay was hanging for his life) She seemed really disappointed she couldn’t talk to him longer when he rushed back inside.
As well as her worrying over him during his battle with the master of smoke, making sure he stays in the tournament as long as he can, the fortune cookie message. (she didn’t have to do that)
I’m not sure she felt any stronger feelings than friendship during the island other than attraction, but I’d like to think she starts feeling that way later.
