Levi Ackerman is a popular character in the Attack on Titan fandom. He is most commonly shipped with Erwin Smith, his superior in the Survey Corps, or Eren Jaeger, the main protagonist and his protégé. He is a dour and strict commanding officer, and is prone to being the "grumpy" part of "grumpy/sunshine" pairings. He has a notable obsession with cleaning.
Prior to the official English translations, Levi's given name was commonly translated by fans as Rivaille.[1]
Canon
As shown in A Choice With No Regrets, prior to his joining to the Survey Corps, Levi lived in the Underground, a city district below the capital. He and his friends, Isabel Magnolia and Farlan Church, were using stolen ODM gear to work heists. When they were commissioned to get rid of Erwin Smith, a then-captain of the Survey Corps, they join to try to get closer to Erwin. In the end Farlan and Isabel die on an expedition outside the walls, while Erwin wins Levi's loyalty.
Later, at the start of the manga/anime, Levi is part of the Survey Corps veterans, the generation preceding Eren and the 104th. He is the one who takes responsibility for allowing Eren to join the military after he is outed as a titan, promising to kill him if needed.
