Why do they even have that lever?

Well done everyone, 10/10 post

we justifiably give Biden a lot of shit but I think “at least 3” is the funniest possible response to some right wing dipshit asking you how many genders there are

Hey remember how in 1995’s Batman Forever, Val Kilmer’s Batman straight up adopts a grown man. Dick is a 27 year old man. Commissioner Gordon is like “he’s all alone in the world” yeah but he’s also extremely grown. Bruce. Like, what.

I pointed this out to my wife while we were watching this movie like “you cannot adopt an adult man” and she said deadass without even looking away from the screen “you did with brennan lee mulligan”

While the comeback is hilarious and I, as a fellow adopter of Brennan Lee Mulligan, laughed—I can’t help but think of how queer coded this would have been in the 90s!!? Like I’m not sure anyone did it on purpose but before same sex marriage or even civil unions were anywhere near thought of, a way same sex couples would give each other legal protections is that one would adopt the other. Bam, hospital visitation, inheritance, etc.

Anyway I wasn’t aware of this in 1995 and therefore did not grok it until I read your post just now so sorry for jumping on and distracting from your amazing joke but my brain went “holy shit that’s gay” lol

oh no please all jokes aside Batman Forever (1995) is an absolute treasure trove of mid 90s gay culture, thanks in large part to the influence of famously gay director Joel Schumacher. An incomplete list of things that happen in this film that only read as gay to me now as an adult, Robin being a clearly full grown adoptee aside:

  • Chris O'Donnell’s martial arts laundry scene, barefoot and in sweatpants
  • the gratuitous shots of Kilmer’s ass in the batsuit
  • the rubber bat nipples
  • Chris O'Donnell’s gay little choker necklace in the streetfight scene
  • Jim Carey’s entire wardrobe eventually culminating in a sequined leotard that is clearly drag inspired
  • the homoerotic relationship between Riddler and Two-Face
  • the one-sided homoerotic relationship between Riddler and Bruce Wayne
  • Robin’s continued use of the word “partner” for what he wants out of a relationship with Batman
  • Chris O'Donnell’s earring
  • Chris O'Donnell’s sideburns
  • Chris O'Donnell’s shirts with the sleeves cut off (and Val’s too in one scene I believe)
  • the scene where Chris O'Donnell shows up to Wayne Manor on a motorcycle and after Bruce compliments it, asks “sarcastically”, “Been to many biker bars, Bruce?”
  • the scene directly following where Bruce shows Dick an entire garage full of motorcycles and promises to give him one if he stays (I MEAN COME ON besides biker culture/leather culture being pretty woven into the fabric of gay culture the whole sugar daddy thing is coming on STRONG)

One could argue and I will that the final fight scene where Batman is forced to choose between saving Robin and saving Nicole Kidman is a metaphor for the closet, and that Batman’s insistence that he can and will save them both, that he can and will love them both, and that he must be and is both Batman and Bruce Wayne is an expression of his bisexuality and THAT, my friends, is why Batman Forever is the best Batman film ever made, and if you disagree do not talk to me or my 14 adult sons ever again

Man I haven’t watched this movie since I was approximately 13 so I now am going to have to have a movie night and add it to my list of “no you don’t understand this is the gayest movie ever” list along with the claymation Rudolph.
