The 1988 Constitution defined new rules with regard to eligibility conditions and benefit values for the rural population. But it was only in July 1991, with Law 8213, that these changes were implemented. We compare — by gender and individual age — activity rates and probability of receiving benefits, before and after the changes in legislation. We also compare, at these two points in time, family structure and the importance of the income of older people in the family budget. The analysis makes clear the positive impact brought by the legislation on the coverage and per capita family income of those families with older members in rural Brazil, bringing about some degree of poverty alleviation, as well as bridging the gender gap with respect to access to benefits. In contrast to what occurs in other Latin American countries, nowadays the Brazilian rural population has almost universal access to social security benefits, not only at family level but also in individual terms.

Reading is a good cultural indicator of a population and a tool for one´s self-improvement. International studies concluded that teachers, the would-be role model for students, are seldom avid readers. Recently, many Brazilian state programs have been implemented aiming at encouraging reading habits, but they are seldom evaluated. Since 2001, Rio de Janeiro City Department of Education (RJCDE) distributes annually to elementary and secondary teachers a voucher exchangeable for any book of their choice. We analyzed books chosen by almost 26,000 teachers in 2012. The tally of the books showed a large variety of titles. Literature was the most prominent group, followed by Children’s and Adolescent Literature, which indicates a possible acquisition for family members. Almost one-fifth of the titles were scientific, technical or professional books, which shows a desire for ...

More and more managers are asked to quickly understand the environment and establish some scenarios for the problems presented. There are evidences that S&G allows Business Administration students to have contact with this kind of situation quickly. Many Brazilian researchers are publishing about this theme and the number of researchers about it is increasing in Brazil. This article aims to demonstrate the growing number of studies on S & G published by Brazilian researchers and throws a question: is it enough that we are able to create a Brazilian Association of Games and Simulations.

The aim is to understand the effect of particles on turbulent flows. The model is implemented in a finite element code which is used to perform numerical simulations. The feedback from the particles on the turbulence and the mean flow of the gas in a vertical channel flow is studied. In particular, the influence of the particle response time and particle volume fraction on the preferential concentration of the particles near the walls, caused by the turbophoretic effect is explored. The study shows that the particle feedback decreases the accumulation of particles on the walls. It is also found that even a low particle volume fraction can have a significant impact on the turbulence and the mean flow of the gas. A model for the particle fluctuating velocity in turbulent gas-particle flow is derived using a set of stochastic differential equations. Particle-particle collisions were taken into account. The model shows that the particle fluctuating velocity increases with increasing particle-particle collisions and that increasing particle response times decrease the fluctuating velocity. Descriptors: turbulent gas-particle flows, modelling, turbophoresis, two-way coupling iii Preface This thesis studies turbulent gas-particle flows. In the first part a short review of the basic concepts and methods is presented. The second part consists of the following papers:

In Geweke and Porter-Hudak's estimator ωd(GPH) of the memory parameter of a long-memory process, a critical choice the user must make is the number of frequencies, M, to be used in the regression of the log periodogram on log frequency. This choice is critical in practice because by simply varying M for a given data set it is often possible to obtain a very wide range of values of the estimator. Although Geweke and Porter-Hudak have found that choosing M to be the square root of the sample size gave good results in simulation, they gave no theoretical justification for this choice. Here, we propose automatic criteria for selecting M, and another tuning constant used in related estimates of the memory parameter, based on frequency domain cross-validation. We provide some theoretical and heuristic justification for the proposed criteria. In a simulation study, we compare some of the resulting automatic methods of estimating the memory parameter with existing non-automatic ones.
