Hilda Carr Pottery on Instagram: "Next up on my mug making series is handling. The mugs are firm leather-hard now so can have their handles attached. I cut my handles from slabs then soften the edges ever so slightly before attaching them. Now they all have their handles on, they're tucked up tightly under plastic so the mug and the handle can acclimatise to each (this will stop the handle from cracking away as it dries). After a day or so the plastic comes off and it'll be time for carving!

Pottery West / Catherine+Matt+Luna too on Instagram: "And this is how the handles are attached to the mug bodies - the tapered mugs which I shared in my last post. ‘Blanks’ are pulled, the part where the handle will be attached is scored and slipped (with clay and water), and then the handle is secured and pulled to shape. It’s fine, fiddly work and does take some time to perfect. #ceramics #pottery #potteryartstudio #keramik #clay #apotterslife #potteryhacks #potteryhandles" Pulled Handles Pottery, Attaching Handles Pottery, Pottery Handles How To, Pottery Mug Handle, Pulling Handles Pottery, Pottery Mug Handles Ideas, Pottery Mug Handles, Mug Handles Pottery, Mug Handles

Chris Penny Ceramics on Instagram: "Pulling handles is about knowing when to stop, when to have wet hands and when to have dry hands, and how dry the cup needs to be. It’s all about practice. I think you can get pretty comfortable applying handles in about 3 years … sorry not years I mean weeks 😂… actually it doesn’t take as long as you think. If you keep the starting lump the same each time. And attach as many handles as you can to cups you are making … say 4 handles per cup, then recycle it and repeat a few times. You’ll soon get really comfortable doing it. I’m thinking about making an actual how to video on this, leave a comment if you think I should… ☺️ #pottery #cups #handles #pullinghandles #potteryvideos #potterystudio #potteryhacks #ceramics" How To Make Pottery Mug Handles, Pulled Handles Pottery, Ceramic Cups Designs, How To Make A Handle For A Mug, How To Make A Clay Cup, Pottery Cup Handles, Diy Pottery Mug Ideas, Pulling Handles Pottery, Ceramic Cup Handles

Naomi Critcher Pottery on Instagram: "Attaching handles to mugs can take a little time, but worth doing properly as the join is vulnerable to cracks. So disappointing to open the kiln after a glaze firing, to find a mug or two unusable because the handles weren’t stuck firmly enough. It also helps to cover them up for several days to make sure the handle and the cup dry evenly. Sometimes handmade mugs have the perception of being expensive. The fact is they take time to make. #handmade #handmademugs #instamugs #instahandmade #handles #potteryprocess #instacraft #makers #mugmaking #craftsmanship #potter #naomicritcherpottery" Making Handles For Pottery, Pottery Handles, Pottery Projects, Handmade Mugs, Cup Handles, Pottery Mugs, Take Time, Kiln, Glaze

Sarah Diane | Small Batch Ceramic Goods on Instagram: "How I make handles… at least this batch and style. There are so many ways to make handles, this week I choose the pulling method. And in my opinion, makes the most elegant form. I first pull lots of short pieces in preparation for my mugs. About 2.5 inches long, and set them to the side. Be sure to slip in score with attaching the handle onto your pottery. I first tap the bottom of the handle to get a nice wide point of attachment and then blend in all the creases once attached. I like to pull the handle on the form again to get a uniform look. I always go back through, add a bit of Clay to any spots that are needing it and blend any problem areas. Always remember to touch up the shape of your handle and make sure that it’s straight Cup Handles, Shape Of You, In My Opinion, My Opinions, I Choose, Small Batch, Always Remember, Touch Up, Small Batches
