Heartwood

Because Bristlecones are slow growing (a hundred yearly growth rings to the inch), the environment harsh and the wood filled with preservative, the "dead" wood is all that keeps the bark covered cambrium layer (the living pump) upright and the tree alive. The color in the heartwood is caused by the weathering of the sap which is unique in it's chemical characteristic and helps prevent rot.
