The start of the year always means an elements and principles of art review for my 6th graders. Rather than having days of lectures, I decided they would do a small art project for each one. I have 12 sections (3 classes a day for 4 days) of my 6th graders. For my sanity I try to keep them working on the same (or very similar things). The Element of Art: Line is a fun element to work with as an art teacher as most art begins with line and line can take on many shapes or forms or expressions. Line works with the other elements: shape, color, form, texture. Line can help create shape or texture. For this reason, it is is a lovely Element of Art to start with in teaching in your art classroom.

Lines are an excellent starting point for lessons with Kindergarteners. To begin this line unit, we read the book Lines That Wiggle. The students used colored tape to make straight lines across their paper. We talked about horizontal, vertical, diagonal and ziz-zag lines.
