Mehndi Hand Sculptures | Art lessons middle school, Middle school art projects, Art lessons

I love cross curricular teaching and this lesson allows me to work with our 6th grade religion/social studies teacher. While she teaches about Islam, I introduce the kids to the beautiful world of Mehndi! Another art teacher found this lesson through Dick Blick and I adapted it and made it one of my favorite lessons to teach (who am I kidding--I say that about all of my lessons; I can't pick just one favorite!). Middle School Art Project Installation Art- Rethinking the Classics | School art projects, Middle school art projects, Middle school art

I think we've all done the classic Giacometti project where students create a wire armature in some sort of pose. We do these projects because a.) there a good stand-by that we know work and b.) because we understand the importance of the lesson! If you're like me, however, you get a little tired of the same old projects and want a good way to keep the lesson intact but boost the complexity a little bit. Here's what I did to try and re-invent the wheel... I started with the classic…

Cardboard Art Sculpture | Art lessons middle school, Cardboard art sculpture, Middle school art projects

This middle or high school sculpture unit only requires a couple of simple materials at a very low cost. Students learn about various famous artists and then choose one of their works to recreate as a cardboard relief sculpture. Students practice their observational drawings skills and learn about foreground, middle ground, and background as well as multiple techniques to create texture using cardboard. The project takes about 2-3 weeks to complete depending on the length of the classes.
