Playa Grote Knip. Also called box crab. This crab was difficult to photograph because he kept trying to bury in the sand when I approached. An interesting aside: I saw one of these crabs on two different occasions. Each time, there was a peacock flounder right next to it. You can see the shadow of the founder at the upper left of this photo. This couldn't be a random chance thing; these two species must associate together at times.

Calappa granulata known as Box Crab or Shame-faced Crab is rose or yellowish with 5 rows of crimson tubercles on the carapace and 4 rows on each forceps. The carapace is squat, rounded and convex and can reach a length of 8-9 cm and a width of 11-12 cm. The Shame-faced Crab is popular seafood, e.g. in Greece, Italy and Spain, although not very common.
