Fintroduction

Hello! My name is Ranch (she/her), I’m an adult, I study environmental and aquatic sciences, and I have a very big interest in aquatic life and biology, especially fish! I reblog a lot of pictures, art, information etc. related to biology, aquatic animals and other cool watery things, and I also post my own daily fish facts and art.

I tag animal death and jellyfish, you can ask me to tag other triggering subjects. I’m always open for suggestions.

When you reblog or comment on my fish facts, please don’t make comments about eating the fish or how they taste, if they’re edible, etc. It makes me uncomfortable and this account is not about eating fish.

Some tags I use and what I use them for:

  • fishfact — My own fish facts and recent news about them
  • fish facts — My own fish facts and facts done by other people
  • aquatic — Umbrella group for non-fish aquatic animals and water-related posts in general. I love many aquatic animals, but I focus mostly on fish so I tend to only tag them with the species name!
  • biology — fish facts and science news, mostly. Environmentalist topics also go here.
  • art — Cool art!
  • my art — Art that is cool AND mine!
  • not fish — Perhaps a misleading name, but this tag is for everything that is not related to fish, other aquatic animals, or water! Sometimes I put other biology things here too, like bugs, but it varies.
  • asks — Asks I get. My askbox is always open and I’m happy to receive fish fact suggestions, questions about aquatic animals, and the like!
  • polls — Polls! Self-explanatory.
  • my polls — Polls specifically made by me.
  • merfolk — Merpeople posts and art! Are you really a fish fan if you don’t also like humans that are essentially fish? /lh
  • dream weirdness — I have funny dreams. Here’s drawings and posts about my dreams.
  • sirpaverse — I am a fan of worldbuilding and dabble in it myself. Mostly you’ll find pondering about merfolk and other centaur people and how they’d work and how society would function in a magical world with them, but also my characters.
  • ahti II — Posts and art with my merman mascot/OC! His name is Ahti II and I’ve drawn some comics where he explains aquatic life other than fish. I love him and you should check him out so you can love him too.
  • Certain other characters also have their own tags. The tag is simply their name!

I try to stick to these the best I can, sometimes I make mistakes! Enjoy your time here :)

I’ve written an essay on the meaning of “fish” and what is and isn’t a “fish, if you have questions about the topic I recommend reading or skimming it through! You can also always ask me about something, even about fishes and what counts as fish, I love answering questions and talking about fish <3

Here’s the marine biology ask game meme!

Here’s the fishblr fake dashboard post!

Doodles of different ways to anthropomorphise fish before I made my fish anthro poll. Can you tell my go-to fish to draw is the pike?

Plus this cute doodle of a dog drinking a hot beverage on the same page:

Same same same!!!! My favourite way to anthropomorphise fish, because they’re still very fish-shaped and look like they belong in the water. Here’s a similarly built sturgeon I sketched a little bit after doodling these (feat. grandma pike and Carfish going “:D”):

sketching is so fun unfortunately i always do it on patterned paper my fishes…. a dog is a fish too. an uncommon ranch “fish as in the phylogenetic concept” moment

In the deep sea, we know all about romance. ❤️

Tomopterids are pelagic polychaetes (segmented worms) with paddle-like parapodia that propel them through the water column. They are relatively common in the midnight zone and can live down to about 2,500 meters (8,200 feet). Many Tomopterids are only a centimeter or two long, but some can also get to be quite large—up to 30 centimeters (12 inches!). They are voracious predators, using their speed and agility to capture and consume a variety of midwater organisms.

Females of this group produce a pheromone that attracts males and signals them to shed sperm into the water. This, in turn, signals the female to release her eggs—a behavior called swarming.

A pink plush hammerhead shark sits comfortably on a pillow, with a laptop that looks like an iBook and a cup of tea. The little shark is probably sending messages of emotional support to his dear friends. The design is inspired by Blahaj, an iconic plush shark from IKEA.ALT

Someone said that my character Roberto is like a hammerhead Blahaj! hehe

It made me think that it would be really cool to have a pink hammerhead shark option, being a complementary color to the current blue Blahaj, it would probably be called... Rosahaj? 🦈🌹

I already have a little hammerhead shark plush, but I would be happy with this giant pink shork one around! 🦈✨
