Anonymous asked: This may be weird and too personal but I read you're a teacher and was wondering if the pay is as awful as everyone says it is? I think I would like to be one and I'm not looking to be rich obviously, but is it... livable? Would I be /okay/ on a teacher's salary? Even if I don't plan to have/live with a partner to split the bills with? I'm just having so much anxiety over this.
Hey! Not too weird or personal. Let me give you a bit of a background on me first, though.
So, when I graduated college, I started working in a day care. With full time hours, working above minimum wage, I made around $20K a year after taxes. That was absolutely not livable. Luckily I still live at home with my parents, so it wasn’t a big deal. The average starting salary for a teacher in this area is around $45K a year, so for me, double what I used to make, the salary isn’t awful at all. Could it be better? Sure. Should it be better? Abso-fucking-lutely. But that’s not the point I’m trying to make.
I should also tell you that I’m currently not an ‘official’ teacher. I’m just a long-term substitute, which means I do all the work of a teacher but my position isn’t permanent in the district because I’m covering the classroom of another teacher, and that teacher is coming back in September.
So, my answer is based on my own experience and also my other teacher friends, most of whom do live on their own.
Teacher salary is very livable. Of course, like with any job, there are outside circumstances to it, those circumstances just being how smart you are with your money. Like you said, you won’t become rich being a teacher, but, on your own, you’ll be able to afford a reasonably priced apartment and car. If you have really high balances on anything, like credit cards or student loans, it would be a good idea to pay those off, or at least down, before moving out on your own, just so your finances will be a bit more stable, and also, your credit score will be higher, which will help in moving out for the first time.
If you want to get a house, go on trips or whatever, like anything else, you’ll just have to save up for it.
I think the teacher salary gets a bad reputation just because, compared to other full-time careers, it is low. And that fucking sucks based on how much work teachers have to do, but it is what it is.
I hope this helped! I feel like this was underwhelming, but if you want me to explain anything else, just let me know!
Anonymous asked: Hi Ange! It's been a while I haven't visited your inbox! How are you? How is life and writing? I hope you're good! :) x
Hi! Life is good. My students had state testing for the last two weeks, and yesterday was the last day thank GOD. I’ve never been so drained, and I wasn’t even the one taking the test, lol. Right now I’m trying to make a post for my new fic, and it’s tough. I can’t decide what pictures to use. I should also be grading assignments, but… I don’t want to, lol.
Writing isn’t really happening atm. I’m taking a little break, probably just until the school year is done. There’s just been a lot going on right now, and I’m just tired all the time, haha, so my mind isn’t working as well as I want it to. But soon, though, I’ll get back to it!
