my thing with mclennon is if one of them thinks the song is about them, it doesn’t really matter to me whether it really is. if john thinks dear boy is about him for example, who cares if it actually isn’t. it obviously works for their relationship as well, that’s why he thinks so

August 24th, 1964 (Bel Air, Los Angeles): Capitol Records’ Jack Wagner asks John and Paul how they approach the songwriting process. They demonstrate it on the piano.
JOHN: We normally approach it on the M-1.
PAUL: We sort of come up, turn past London – and when we get to Scarborough, we feel we’re there! [laughs] As you – as they say.
INTERVIEWER: [bemused] Well, I guess I asked for it.
PAUL: No, we just – we have a very informal approach, we’ve got no formula at all, you know, for writing songs. We just do it as it happens.

PAUL: But uh, it depends, you know, sometimes there’s a line that he does, and then I do a line, or sometimes John can write a whole song—
JOHN: Can I?
PAUL: Oh, yes, why he told me! He’s a wonder when he gets going. Sometimes I can even do that.
I’m actually still thinking about paul being like “i understand two virgins and i think it’s great and if i don’t understand it’s because johns so intellectually ahead of me and i need to catch up and when i do understand i will agree with him”. Girl 😭😭
