hey can we talk about that alternate ending to max that’s floating around for a second. in the actual episode, scully theorizes that mulder bought the apollo 11 keychain thinking about their work together and her previous and ongoing sacrifices to their cause. but in the draft script, mulder tells her that he bought the keychain thinking about how much she means to him. she changed his life the way the moon landing changed the world.

here’s where i think the writers actually knocked it out of the park, but it’s really annoying that it doesn’t make any sense that they knocked it out of the park unless you have access to both the draft script and the actual episode. scully and mulder are both really good (derogatory) at thinking they know what they mean to the other while being a hair off from reality. scully knows that mulder really cares for and respects her as a partner in their work, but she won’t let herself see that he loves her until the hallway scene in fight the future. of course scully would come to the conclusion she does about what the keychain means. but mulder never actually confirms her guess, and i think it’s because she’s wrong, or at least not entirely correct. i think that even in the episode, his motivation for giving her the keychain hasn’t changed from what it was in the draft. scully is just too scared to see it, and mulder is too scared to tell her
