Contain: to prevent something from getting out, to store or to describe what an object has (inside).

"we contained (stored) the animals in a barn"

If you don't include her on our school work, she's going to be mad at us.

Contain - to have something or something already in

Comprise - has the same sense from the previous words, but I'd use it like this

A: They are synonyms. They generally mean the same thing in everyday speech. However, if something is *inside* of something else, you would say "contain." For example, Google "containers." Jars contain cookies.

A: Yeah, contain means inside kind of but they have slightly separate meanings so they can't usually be interchanged. Include can mean like "this will be added" or "this is also there" or something like that. Like if someone tells you to "include a person" that means add them kind of, like let them be with you, "let them be included." So kind of like added. So contain can't be used in those situations. Contain usually means that object A holds object B inside it. "The jar contained sugar." You usually use "include" for a situation to make it part of a whole set. Like, "Dinner, a show, and one night in a hotel will be included in the $120.00 package." It tells you the parts of a whole. If you are still confused, I'm sorry. Feel free to ask more questions.

A: They are different forms of the same word. Include is a verb (action word such as run, hug, or smile) while including is a preposition (words that tell you information such as about, above, across, or after). The only difference is grammatical. You can use whichever and people will understand, and as you hear them used it will become more natural. There isn't a set rule, it's something you learn through conversation. Here are some examples, though :)
