A: The word captions has different definitions. If you are referring to captions used for TV shows or movies, then captions are generally used for the hard of hearing (deaf) to watch/understand the show or movie. Personally, I am not hard of hearing, but I always put on English captions for TV shows and movies though my native language is English.

Subtitles are translations of what is being spoken in the movie or show for people who cannot understand the language in that the show or movie.
