This quote sums up the whole character plot of King Lear and explains why this play is a tragedy. King Lear is not a tragedy because most characters die or because of the betrayal. I believe the true sadness comes from the demise of Lear's mental state and whole life. Lear lost his love for others, his own power and his kingdom which left him mentally and physically weak. By the end, the pity I felt for Lear wasn't because he died, but for life he had endured.
