Students of 19th-century American universities traditionally burnt textbooks from their toughest courses at the end of the semester. Trigonometry was seen as one of the toughest, especially at Vassar College. Starting in the 1870's the Trig Ceremonies were the destruction of symbols representing trig. This 1887 version depicts students acting out the temptation story. The serpent tricks Adam and Eve into eating the apple of trig, causing them to die. Then the imps of math dance around them.
