i <3 your substack poem today…. there is this thing in math called a covering space which are basically things that look locally like other things

here is an example ^-^ the second drawing is a ‘double cover’ of the first one (these are supposed to be circles). at the blue dot in the first one, you have one line going in and one going out. the same is true for each dot in the second drawing. you can keep doing this forever by adding more dots onto the circle

the single cover of a torus is a square. you get an n-cover by laying out n squares attached to each other. the universal cover (n = infinity basically) is a 2d plane.

and also i have plans to quilt something representing this for my mentor if i have enough time.
