fair. you know what album SLAAAAAPS tho? in the pain way? the one she writes after seeing yelena with monica that night at the benefit thing. When she realizes “oh…fuck…OH FUCK…oh no…hateeeeeeeeeeee her with someone else hate her with anyone who isnt me”. like in theory SHE KNEW. yelena has dated other people before monica. and kate has found out. but she’d never SEEN it. never had to confront it. and the moment she did she’s like NAH ABORT MISSION and the fact that she still has to stew on that shit for almost five more years? date more people knowing she’s not INTO IT like that? like fuuuuuullly acknowledging to herself that she wants yelena back but not being able to do shit about because yelana won’t even crack the door open for that???? delicious angst.

Another soundstage in another country. Spain, this time. At least it’s fall.

Kate’s the lead. Not just first on the call sheet…The Lead. The movie’s hers. She stepped in three weeks before production was slated to start when the original actress shredded her ACL in a stunt rehearsal. A mega-budget action flick with just enough sci-fi flavor to justify the fireballs, directed by a Swedish wunderkind who keeps calling everything “grounded but poetic.” Whatever the hell that means.

Yelena had been wary from the start.

“You’re supposed to be off for a while.”

“I know,” Kate had said, practically vibrating. “But this is the one. You don’t turn down a franchise starter like this.”

Yelena had sighed. Glanced down at Eleanor, still wobbling on toddler legs, babbling Russian nonsense that made her mother beam.

“Are you sure you’re ready?”

Yelena didn’t mean for the movie. She meant for this. For jumping back into the deep end after the year they’d had. The miscarriage in February, the failed IVF cycles, the gutting ache of another negative test just days before the offer came through.

But Kate insisted. So they packed up their lives. Again. Rented a villa with blackout curtains and a half-broken espresso machine. Yelena kept Ellie quiet while cameras rolled and made herself indispensable to the stunt team. Kate brought her coffee every morning and kissed them both before every scene. They made it work.

They always make it work.

The sun has just dipped below the Los Angeles horizon, leaving behind a bruised violet sky and the soft gleam of strung lights crisscrossing an obscene hillside property in Bel-Air. One of those houses with an eight figure view and a valet line full of black Escalades. No press. No paparazzi. Just money. Cause-forward money, sure…but still money.

As the lighting dims, so do the conversations. Flutes lower. Silverware stills.

On stage, a politely handsome nonprofit exec taps the mic, grinning like he just landed a punchline.

Yelena doesn’t look up. Her fingers trace the rim of her glass with lazy disinterest. Monica sits beside her, all poised elegance, one hand resting lightly on Yelena’s knee beneath the white-draped table. They’re laughing at something still hanging between them. Low, private, and warm. Eyes only for each other. Their table’s near the front. Not spotlight-close, but close enough to see the stage without craning.

Unlucky, in hindsight.

lol the fastest ive finishes a movie is six days. from the moment i woke up with the idea in my head to the moment i typed “the end” on page 120. that script has producers attached and has won all sorts of awards. i’ve written pilots in three days. If I’m in the zone im LOCKED IN. i just hit page 100 on this one and only been working on it since like last monday. im hoping to be done by sunday.

we’re about to end march and this year ive already written three features, three short films, two short stories, an op-ed, and a whole pitch deck for one of the features im out pitching. this will be the fourth feature I finish this year. i wanted to have it done by the end of Q1 but…OH WELL.

its fucking kicking me in the teeth man. but i guess that’s what first drafts are supposed to do. or at least im telling myself that so I dont throw my computer across the room. a friend was busting my balls earlier because i was complaining how long it’s taking and they were basically like “Oh noooooo it’s going to take you three weeks to write a movie instead of one. The rest of us normal people take like six months to write a feature. You write a dozen in that time. Shut up.” it was all jokingly of course but it’s FRUSTRATING because im not used to it feeling like this much of a slog. i’ve been known to write 30 script pages in a day. for the past week ive been lucky if i write 6. second acts are such a fucking nightmare. but im two scenes away from finishing it. then it’ll be the bigger nightmare of making sure the third act doesn’t suck and ruin the rest of the movie. that’ll be fun (not…if you catch me crying about it just smile and nod lol)
