It takes Frank a long-ass while to realize what the fuck just happened, and the moment he understands it, something in his chest is going cold. He breathes out a low, “Shit,” rushing to Red’s side, careful of his footing and absolutely contemplating shooting the man who downed him, if Red’s unconscious.
He’s not, apparently, given the man hauls himself onto his elbows then flings out a truncheon, knocking the attacker out cold.

Summary:
Frank had, of course heard of what happened to feral birds. That there came a point where nothing more than instinct took over, stealing voices and thoughts and freedom. Clipped feathers were enough to ruin a soul. To ruin a life. Sure, they would grow back, but it was akin to an amputation, to cripple an avian’s ability to fly.
“Why are you wearing your Halloween costume, Red?” he asks, but the question isn’t as accusatory as Matt expected. There’s almost amusement in Frank’s voice—no, there is amusement in his voice, which is rare enough to startle Matt.
“Well, aren’t we going on patrol?” he asks back, tilting his head to the side. “Or, a job—whatever we’re calling it these days.”
“Nope, no patrol today, Red. I was wondering if…” Frank’s tone shifts, and his heart starts beating faster—nervous. He’s… nervous.
(Or, when Frank texted Matt and asked if he was free of Friday, he’d never thought they would be going out on a… date.)
