Once this is merged, let's change the "Source" in the RustPython/website repo from gh-pages to master branch

Maybe it is an idea to create a website branch in this repository so that we update the website less frequently, say once a week / month?

That might also work, but the git log will be a little more messy. Also the gh-pages branch will have completely different files then the master, which from my experience is prone to mistakes during merge and rebase.
