This obviously needs some work with regard to property listeners and it might be better to move the ide shim to a separate library that depends on this.

For property listeners we might have another property listener library that depends on this also and rather than mix in the listening and subscribing the property listener library would subscribe/unsubscribe for the caller along with listener setup/teardown.

The message handler front script also would depend on this.
