#850 expands tripcolor capabilities

Yeah, that sounds like a good idea. What's the time frame? I'm really busy at the moment, but if it's not too urgent, I should be able to put something together.

We hope to get a rc1 out on September 17, so ideally before that.

Plenty of time. I should have a draft well before then. Thanks for pinging me on the issue.

I decided it was easy enough to write up a quick description instead of procrastinating on it. See PR #1122.

Is a mention of the python3 support added in the whats new section? It's a pretty heroic milestone which I feel should be in there (and acknowledgement of anyone who worked on it).
