This issue has already been opened : there are 2 colormap with almost identical name: spectral and Spectral (casing counts). Name was changed to nipy_spectral but there is no warning which leads to @NelleV complaining and engaged a couple of coworkers in long bughunt.

I would suggest that the use of spectral (lower case) raised a deprecation warning or even raise an error as default are being changed.
