Supersedes #6759. I think the idea was to make the white ticks on the 2nd plot visible on all the axes. This does that by setting the ticks to point into the axes. Also some PEP8.

The overall example could need some explanation. I'm not clear why there are two ways to plot this, what the advantages are, and which one should use in which situation.

However, I'm approving as is because this is an incremental improvement.
