PR Summary

While responding to a question on the mailing list I discovered we had never removed the 2.2.x branches from the docs, this does so.

We also still have the 2.2.x and 2.2.5-doc branches on the repo, I'm inclined to drop those now as well.

👍 to removing those branches. So long as there aren't any unique commits on them, they can always be reproduced from a tag or commit somewhere.

Yeah, we should make sure to merge the up to the default branch (even if it is in the "take no changes, but lie to git that they are merged" mode).

We have also been keeping a running log of branches removed at https://discourse.matplotlib.org/t/github-branch-log/20815 so as long as the commits do not get git-garbage-collected we can always re-create them.

The last merge up appears to be v2.2.3.
