Is there a better word than techniques? Maybe pattern, method, type, ...

Visual idioms is what's used in some of the literature but I think I can probably rework this to like visualizations or plots.

I figure data graphics would also be too clunky. But the visualization zoo paper is making me think I can also replace selection with survey or overview and that may also make things less clunky.
