Michiel de Hoon, the macosx author and maintainer, has been having some trouble with github, so I asked him to review the issues and PRs for macosx and send me an updated file and I would submit the PR for him. Here is the text of his email:
Dear John,
As promised, attached you will find my latest version of src/_macosx.m. This version fixes all Python3 issues, at least as far as they are related to the MacOSX backend.
