This is a fix of #8890 . Somehow the PR got borked because of a rebase, and I don't think it should be on @johnh202 to figure that out. So, this makes what I think were the intended changes, now based off of the matplotlib master branch. I've made John the author of this commit so that he still shows up in the commit history.

LMK if this looks OK. The PR has already been reviewed so I think as long as tests pass (and as long as John is cool w/ this) we should be good to merge.
